Papy aux Fourneaux: Grandpa kicks Grandma out of the kitchen (Happy Anniversary!)

One year ago, Papy kicked Mamy out of the Kitchen and took over.

Since then, more than 13,000 guests have visited again and again to enjoy their homemade casseroles (cocottes), play Baby Foot and board games, and drink a fancy Lillet Tonic on the terrace. There’s even a grocery store right at the restaurant entrance!

Papy aux Fourneaux is a modern “table d’hôte”, translating to “host’s table”, that offers delicious homemade dishes to share as you would at home.

The concept is simple. There are daily dishes presented on a slate, and they include appetizers, mains, and dessert. All made with ingredients from small local French producers.

Dishes are cooked for a minimum of two persons. For groups of three and more: the more sharing you do, the less you pay.

Papy aux Fourneaux Menu Prices:

  • Entrée: 9-10 €
  • Plat: 17-19 €
  • Dessert: 7-8 €

The hardest part? Agreeing on what dish to share 😉

Get comfortable guys, because I’m going to show you just how cozy the meals at Papy aux Fourneaux are!

Papy aux Fourneaux in Paris: Our Experience

A welcoming environment with big tables to accommodate the whole family or a group of friends and homemade casserole dishes passing from hand to hand – what’s not to love?

Vintage and humorous décor adorn the restaurant: Porcelain plates and Papy’s berets for lampshades, a lounge corner complete with games and a swing, garden gnomes and antique gadgets on shelves… Very creative!

We’re seated and already there’s a loaf of baguette waiting for us to shred to pieces. Love the checkered table napkins in rings!

After referring to the slate presenting the dishes of the day, we opted to share two of each item since we couldn’t decide – they all sounded so good! Besides, we’re on holiday and there’s lots of walking to do 😉

I ordered their homemade Iced Tea which is so refreshing and low in sugar, just the way I like it. T had chilled wine because he’s cooler than I am.

Our server suggested the cold melon soup, served in a large glass bowl accompanied by a giant ladle and two beautiful smaller glass bowls. I don’t think melon soup would ever be a thing in our home, but maybe for the French? I’ll give it points for originality.

The second appetizer T and I shared was the Vegetarian “tart” which I thought resembled a quiche that was stuffed with tomato, zucchini, mozzarella, and basil. The presentation is very simple in a wooden rectangular box and the piece de resistance is eye-catching, placed on a sheet of parchment paper with no fuss.

Mixed salad is served on the side for both appetizers.

For our main course, T and I opted for Beef Bourguignon (served with mashed potato) and a plump baked tomato stuffed with risotto and Parmesan (served with the most delicious roasted potatoes).

Even our mains came in large cast iron dishes meant for sharing and serving ourselves just as we would at home! Loved the concept here at Papy aux Fourneaux!

I really enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon along with the roasted potatoes that accompanied the stuffed tomato. I’m a rebel like that. The dish is traditionally served with either rice or potatoes. I prefer to have rice over mashed potato since the bourguignon already has a soft texture. However, this is my personal preference.

Dessert was tasty and refreshing, but not exactly what I would call comfort food. We shared a fruit skewer with dark chocolate dip and a vanilla cheesecake. How about apple crumble or pain perdu? That’s comfort!

We had some tea which came with cute little mustache cakes which tasted fantastic! I would want a giant mustache cake for dessert 😉

To celebrate their first year anniversary and thank everyone for their support, Papy Aux Fourneaux is hosting a TABLE D’HÔTES evening on Friday, July 20!

Here’s the unique menu for this special occasion:

🍺 20h-21h: Drinks & Starters

🍲 21h: Main Dish

🎂 22h: Dessert

🍷 Wine included

Price: All of the above for 35€ / person + “Papy” Hour prices on other drinks all evening!

Final Verdict?

Papy aux Fourneaux goes against traditions and puts not one, but two, (young) grandpas in aprons, and we love it 😉

If you love home-cooked meals, classic comfort food, and French cuisine in a family-friendly and welcoming environment, then Papy aux Fourneaux is the restaurant for you!
