I’ve visited The Food Dealer in Mar Mikhael on multiple occasions in the past. I always found it to be a tad too pricey – yes, I know organic means double and sometimes triple the price in Lebanon – however, I was still not convinced it was worth the price tag. Albeit the ambiance and staff were pretty cool.
Now under different management, The Food Dealer has gotten a “face lift” of sorts, and I’m loving the new chilled vibes and new exclusive events that the venue has to offer!
The space
The space at The Food Dealer has been reorganized in the past year after its temporary closure. The fridge was removed making the venue much more spacious. Now, you can order from the menu instead of choosing from those available on display.
There are many products you can buy on display from local “mouneh” (preserves) to handmade crafts and artisan gifts. Further inside, there’s a leather workshop where you can customize your own leather backpack or wallet, for instance.
The Food Dealer: A Vegan Brunch in Beirut
There aren’t many places where we can find an exclusively vegan brunch in Lebanon.
Remember that time I did the vegan challenge for 10 days and then listed all the vegan products in Lebanon I was using at the time?
Even The Food Dealer doesn’t offer this vegan brunch on a frequent basis. However, I’m pleased to find out that it will make another appearance in mid-April due to its success last weekend!
We started our morning with a fresh ginger and honey hot drink, which I would strongly recommend. The honey is very subtle compared to the strong ginger.
Rula Korban, founder of Leela Love in Action and well-being counselor, was the star guest chef at The Food Dealer’s vegan gluten-free brunch.
When Rula cooks, she presents colourful and wholesome plates full of goodness that even non-vegans would enjoy. Some of the dishes offered on Saturday’s vegan brunch at The Food Dealer include Fajitas on buckwheat (using tempeh instead of chicken), Veggie Maki Rolls, Margherita Pizzas on rice bread with cashew cheese and a homemade tomato sauce, Banana Flaxseed Pancakes, and more.
The food was delicious and nourishing. The best part was that I didn’t feel sick or bloated at all after we left even though I had some foods that I’m intolerant to (e.g. bananas).
Now that I’ve rediscovered The Food Dealer, I’m interested in seeing more of it. Perhaps an exclusive review of their menu is in order! What do you think?
