1. Dutch Apple Pie
Frequently nominated as the best Dutch apple pie in Amsterdam, the apple pie at Winkel 43 is a masterpiece. I would definitely give it a 10/10!

2. Stroopwaffel
Stroopwaffels (stroop waffles) were one of my favourite things to eat in Amsterdam (and it’s super fun watching them make it fresh). Two thin waffles stuck together with sweet syrup; these delicious Dutch delicacies are best enjoyed warm and gooey from a street market. Some vendors serve it with chocolate too and it’s excellent!
Tip: If you plan to take some home (which you should!), place it on top of your coffee and enjoy it warm 😉

3. Dutch Cheese
Did you know that world-renowned brands like Gouda, Edam, Leiden and Maasdam are actually named after towns and cities in the Netherlands? Around Amsterdam, there are plenty of cheese shops with a vast array of options to try.

4. Bitterballen
Bitterballen are savoury Dutch snacks made from a creamy meat ragout, typically veal or beef, that is breaded and deep-fried until crispy. They’re often enjoyed with mustard for dipping and are a popular choice at Dutch pubs and social gatherings.

5. Croquettes
Go to any FEBO around the city center and you’ll find a yummy variety of cheap hot snacks that you get via putting a coin in the slot. The croquettes here are a must try!

6. Dutch Fries
Fries in Amsterdam are a very serious matter. These thick cut fries are also referred to as “patatjes” or “frites” on menus in Amsterdam, and they usually come served in a paper cone topped with sauce. Order the “patat speciaal” which is a mix of curry ketchup, mayo and onions.
Where? Voted No.1 Holland’s Fries, Manneken Pis Amsterdam would be my go-to!
7. Dutch Pancakes
As opposed to the American thick and fluffy pancakes which we all know and love, Dutch pancakes have a thinner, more crepe-like consistency giving them more surface area for tasty toppings 😉 Order a traditional Dutch pancake with fruit, cream and syrup.
Where? The Pancake Bakery or PANCAKES Amsterdam or The Happy Pig Pancake Shop or Pancakehouse Upstairs (just couldn’t decide on this one!)
8. Raw Herring
Raw herring a popular snack in the Netherlands. Bite-sized pieces of the fish are presented on a paper tray, along with finely diced onions and sliced pickles. You use a toothpick to pick up each piece.
Tip: The best time to try raw herring is between May and July when the herring is said to be at its sweetest.

9. Kibbeling
If you’re not into raw fish, then why not try a fried cod fish? These delicious battered deep fried bites are perfect paired with mayonnaise and a squeeze of lemon.
Where? The best kibbeling experience you can have would definitely be fresh from a street market or food truck. We tried it at Albert Cuyp Market!
10. Oliebollen
Oliebollen (pronounced “o-lee-bollun”) are deep-fried sweet dumplings that often contain fruit pieces and are dusted with powdered sugar. These tasty treats are traditionally enjoyed around New Year’s Eve in the Netherlands.

A trip to Amsterdam would not be complete without trying the famous poffertjes. Poffertjes have been enjoyed in the Netherlands since the 18th century and they were traditionally associated with religious festivals. Today, they are a staple at fairs, markets, and special events throughout the country. They are also commonly enjoyed in Dutch households as a sweet snack or dessert.

12. Ontbijtkoek
“Ontbijtkoek” means “breakfast cake”, and who wouldn’t want to eat cake for breakfast? This Dutch spice cake also known as a “pepper cake” is made of rye and is best enjoyed with a spread of butter on top and a cup of tea or coffee.

13. Dutch Liquorice
Liquorice is a thing in Amsterdam, and it’s not what you thought it would be. They’re also referred to as “drops” and there are so many different flavours including savoury options too! If you like liquorice, then you will definitely enjoy what this Dutch treat has to offer.
