Let’s indulge in legendary chocolate world of Jacques Genin.
In a beautiful boutique styled like an art museum, you’ll find the artist’s fine quality chocolate along with other sweet specialties including pastries, toffees, and jellies.
Before I get into the details of our sweet discoveries at Chocolaterie Jacques Genin, here’s an interesting story we learnt courtesy of our Paris food tour guide, Melanie.
In the early 1900s, Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) awards were established to celebrate the category of trades by giving professionals titles such as “best lamp-maker” or “best blacksmith” depending on their skills. It was only until the 2000s that food-related MOFs started. Winners earn the title for life and the privilege to wear the French flag on their uniform! Unfortunately, Jacques Genin cannot participate since he’s a self-taught chocolatier without an official degree!
Genin used to have a workshop and supplied Michelin-starred restaurants and hotels before he opened his own flagship store. Now his workshop is on the second floor of this very boutique and he even has a tea salon where guests can enjoy his unique pastries.
Genin has one other shop in Paris on the left bank on the Rue de Varin.
This talented self-taught chocolate artist creates beautiful sweet specialties that we had the privilege to taste during our Paris Food Tour of the Marais with Paris by Mouth.
Now for what we tried at Chocolaterie Jacques Genin:
Chocolate
Genin’s refined chocolate squares are not cloyingly sweet and taste exquisite. The lemon thyme ganache is melt-in-your-mouth delicious with very subtle hints of lemon and thyme. The mint ganache in dark chocolate is also a must.
We also tried a hazelnut praline with orange liqueur and saffron in dark chocolate, but it wasn’t my cup of tea as I’m not a fan of orange flavour.
Next, Pâtes de fruit (and vegetable!) jelly
There are fruit flavours such as pineapple, mango & passionfruit, and blood orange, as well as vegetable flavours such as beetroot, asparagus, and green tomato. T and I went for one Mango & Passionfruit and one Asparagus, a new flavour in the Jacques Genin collection – both were unique and enjoyable.
Toffee
Another out-of-this-world Jacques Genin sweet is from his toffee collection.
We were offered a Mangue-passion (Mango & Passion Fruit) toffee to taste. What I liked about it is that it doesn’t stick to the roof of your mouth as most toffees and sticky candies do! The toffee is definitely exceptional and tastes divine.
Final Verdict?
A stop at Chocolaterie Jacques Genin in Le Marais is a must when in Paris. Buy a box as an edible souvenir to take back home to your friends and family.
Or just keep it all to yourself, it’ll be our little secret.
