“For us the cuisine is, above all, ‘memory’, pleasure and hospitality” – Marmita Restaurant, Skiathos
Marmita Restaurant in the town of Skiathos is set in a traditional house, situated on a beautiful garden terrace straight out of a fairy tale. The charming candlelit garden atmosphere created the perfect setting for a romantic intimate dinner.
Marmita Restaurant in Skiathos follows traditional cooking methods very religiously when creating their simple, yet delectable dishes.
They offer a diverse menu filled with authentic Greek recipes using local and seasonal ingredients representing their passion for Greek food, culture, and traditions. The menu goes further to reflect the restaurant’s care by indicating dietary restrictions; (V) Vegetarian, (Vg) Vegan, and (G) Contains gluten.
We were received with a warm welcome and smiles, setting the tone for the entire evening.
We were then asked if we would like anything to drink. How about a fragrant white wine from Santorini? Yes, please. Thank you.
This was probably the best white wine I’ve had to date.
The Metoxi Chromitsa (Mετώχι Χρωμιτσας) (€20.50) from Mount Athos was aromatic and fruity in flavour; it features the Assyrtiko grape. These rare and ancient grapes are cultivated in the island of Santorini from some of the world’s oldest vineyards which date back 3,500 years!
The extensive wine list at Marmita Restaurant is largely based on Greek producers and indigenous selections in order to best represent authentic Greek wine.
Let’s begin!
Greek Salad, of course, is a must. The Greek Salad (€7.50) at Marmita Restaurant was the traditional one which was delightful – a salad consisting of tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, green peppers, olives, capers, parsley, and most importantly, Greek delicious crumbly feta cheese. It was excellent and one of the best we tried on holiday in Greece.
Our server additionally recommended the Grilled Mastelo Cheese (€6.50), a cow-based cheese from Chios Island. It’s served at Marmita Restaurant with sweet tomato marmalade and olive oil with fresh herbs.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Fried squid (€8.50) which T doesn’t seem to take a liking to – something about the slimy feeling of the squid. I, on the other hand, love all kinds of seafood and don’t discriminate. The battered squid was perfectly crunchy on the outside and not oily at all.
For our entrées, T and I extended the seafood theme.
I went for the Steamed Cod (€16.50) cooked with mussels and vegetables. Amusingly, the dish looked very similar to a soup and was even presented in a deep bowl; a black pot was also presented for the empty mussel shells. The cod was thick and moist and the flavours of the dish marinated beautifully together.
Although I later regretted my (somewhat) healthy decision after I saw that mouthwatering rack of lamb being rushed to the table next to us! I must order that next time!
T ordered the Sea bass fillet (€17.50) cooked in parchment paper (en papillote) together with a side of vegetables. The fish was finished with a generous drizzle of olive oil with fresh herbs.
Two beautiful desserts were presented before our eyes.
The “Ab Fab” (€2.80) which is basically a rectangular slice of Crème Caramel was absolutely delicious. The texture was so smooth and creamy that it melts in your mouth like butter.
I died and went to chocolate heaven with their Dark Chocolate dessert served with olive oil and salt flakes (€3.00). The combination of ingredients is simple, however, the resulting dish is definitely not average in taste. It was beyond extraordinary and the perfect way to end our meal.
In brief, don’t skip dessert at Marmita Restaurant!
