Brass Beirut Gets the Gold [restaurant closed]

Brass Beirut, a restaurant-pub, recently opened in the heart of Achrafieh. I don’t know about you, but this area of Achrafieh (Sodeco, Tabaris…) confuses me – I’m always getting lost!

After we (finally!) found the restaurant (on foot), we were greeted by one of the owners, Khaled M., who welcomed us with great hospitalit. He took care of us along with all the other guests all evening.

Brass was still in the soft opening stage and there was a tasting and photography session going on, so we got a sneak peak from behind the scenes.

The first impression you get from Brass Beirut is: French bistro

It’s not a particularly large venue: As soon as you enter, there is a bar with lights hanging from the ceiling. Two small dining areas and a private section with a large round table that would seat about 10 people can be found alongside the bar. The lights were dimmed towards 9pm when more people started to arrive.

We started with wine; white for me, red for him.

And then came the starters…

The Tzatziki dip with toasted bread (8,500 LBP) was delicious; thick Greek yogurt with a hint of garlic, shredded cucumbers and oregano, topped with olive oil.

Shrimps à la Plancha (14,500 LBP) – Juicy shrimps with fresh herbs and garlic served with a gremolata and lemon sauce. Tasty, but not something I would order again.

The Brass Salad (16,500 LBP) – definitely another favourite! It’s very similar to a Greek Salad without the feta cheese, topped with a juicy grilled chicken and covered in that delicious Tzadziki dip we had earlier. I loved the salad’s tart vinegar dressing.

The Raw Zucchini & Pesto Salad (15,500 LBP) was amazing. Seriously. Raw slivers of carrots and zucchini mixed with capers, parsley, pine nuts and shaved Parmesan in a pesto dressing. The combination of flavours was on-point! Order this. You won’t regret it 😉

Roast Beef Filet with Red Wine Sauce (27,500 LBP) – Australian beef slices (medium-well) on top of a bed of silky puree and covered in a red wine sauce; a little too much sauce though. I felt like I was having a soup.

Asian Grilled Salmon (31,500 LBP) served with angel hair (aka flavourless) noodles. Pair those boring noodles with Brass’ delicious Asian sauce and those rubbery tasteless noodles have transformed into a flavour-packed base. The grilled salmon is seasoned with herbs and ginger sitting atop a bed of noodles and vegetables.

The prices are not sky-high as you may find in other restaurants in and around Beirut. Brass Beirut offers fair prices accompanied with generous portions.  We will definitely come back soon to try out more of their appetizing menu items.

Note: Brass Beirut moved to Monot in beirut in 2017
