Normally, one doesn’t associate “Greece” with “chocolate”, because it’s simply not known for it. Say chocolate and one thinks of the charming Belgium or scenic Switzerland. Check out Huffington’s best chocolate destinations in the world.
However, even though chocolate isn’t a recognized specialty of the Greeks, it doesn’t mean you can’t find some high quality chocolate in Greece.
Meet Aristokratikon.
We had the pleasure of visiting this chocolatier in Athens and learned about their family history in chocolate making. Of course, the cocoa is imported, but these fine chocolatiers have a talent for producing some of the best chocolate in Athens.
Established in 1928, Aristokratikon (ΑΡΙΣΤΟΚΡΑΤΙΚΟΝ) has been making authentic hand-crafted chocolate paying high attention to quality, Greek ingredients, creativity, and innovation.
Sample their chocolate creations such as the orange slices covered in dark chocolate or my personal favourite, the dark chocolate hazelnut clusters are quite literally melt-in-your-mouth delicious!
It’s not exactly that dreamy feeling you get with Belgian chocolate, but it’s great relative to other options in Athens.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the milk chocolate varieties as I found the milk chocolate a tad too sweet with a strange after taste. Definitely go for the dark chocolate options at Aristokratikon.
Aristokratikon doesn’t only sell chocolate, but other specialties as well. You can find Turkish delights, marzipan, raw nuts, and more.
Next time you’re in Athens, after you’re done buying all the city’s stocks of olive oil, pay a visit to Aristokratikon and pick up a box of chocolate as a souvenir for a sweet option instead. 98% of cocoa is actually made up of nutritious substances. So it’s safe to say that chocolate is good for you! The darker varieties, that is 😉

It’s right off Syntagma Square which is where you’re dropped off if you’re coming by bus from the airport. So yes, in central Athens.
